Germany is probably best known for castles, beer and Christmas markets, but summer here is something truly special. That’s why we always make a point to spend as much time in Germany as possible during the warmer months. From rushing waterfalls and lush forests to surprisingly pristine seaside views and adventurous hikes, there’s no shortage of incredible places to explore. It was tough, but we’ve managed to pick out 10 of our favorite summer destinations in Germany—all perfect additions to your summer travel adventures!
Southern Eifel near Irrel
- Location: ‘Devil’s Gorge’ Visitor’s Center

This region of the Eifel is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. Near the town of Irrel, you’ll find the famous Teufelsschlucht (Devil’s Gorge), a dramatic ravine carved by centuries of water erosion. The trail winds past mossy rock formations, narrow crevices and even a waterfall or two. Just a short walk away is the Irreler Wasserfälle, which not technically waterfalls, but rather powerful rapids that rush between massive boulders. It’s still a great place to cool off on a hot summer day, especially if you enjoy being surrounded by wild, unspoiled nature.

Baltic Sea near Rügen
- Location: Jasmund National Park Visitor Center
- Parking: Parkplatz Hagen for Jasmund | Parkplatz Nonnevitz for the northern beaches
Rügen is one of Germany’s most stunning summer destinations, offering everything from peaceful forest trails to pristine beaches. Jasmund National Park is home to the famous white chalk cliffs, which tower above the Baltic Sea and are best viewed from the Königsstuhl (King’s Chair) or the quieter Victoria View. Up north in Nonnevitz, you’ll find a more relaxed, local atmosphere with wide sandy beaches and fewer crowds as well as the enchanting Märchenwald (fairy tale forest).

Schwäbische Alb near Bad Urach

The Schwäbische Alb is often overlooked, but it’s one of the best places in Germany for summer hikes and waterfall adventures. The trail near Bad Urach leads through a peaceful forest to the Bad Urach Waterfall, where water tumbles over mossy cliffs into a rocky stream below. After a good rain, the water even runs down the stone steps beside the falls, creating a fairytale-like experience as you ascend alongside the rushing water. For those with extra energy, a hike up to the nearby Hohenurach Castle ruins rewards you with sweeping views of the valley.

Holstein Switzerland near Plön

Holstein Switzerland may not have alpine peaks, but its gently rolling hills and sparkling lakes are just as magical—especially in summer. One of our favorite spots here was the Prinzeninsel, a narrow peninsula that stretches into the Großer Plöner See. Surrounded by water and shaded by old trees, the trail along the island offers peaceful lake views and a fairytale-like atmosphere. At the tip of the peninsula, there’s even a small swimming area that’s perfect for cooling off after your walk.

Pfälzer Wald near Eppenbrun
- Location: Altschlossfelsen Trailhead

The Palatinate Forest is one of the most underrated summer destinations in Germany and the area near Eppenbrunn proves just how magical it can be. The hike to the Altschlossfelsen leads you through a peaceful woodland to a towering, rust-colored sandstone formation that stretches for over a kilometer. The stone walls are layered and weathered into all sorts of fantastical shapes that look like something out of a fantasy novel. Best of all, the trail is usually quiet, making it a great escape into nature without the crowds.

Moselle Valley near Bremm
- Location: Moselle Bend Viewpoint
- Parking: Parkplatz Calmont Moselschleife
The Moselle Valley is famous for its winding river, charming wine villages and steep vineyards—but the section near Bremm offers something extra special. The Calmont Klettersteig is a thrilling via ferrata trail that takes you up the steepest vineyard in Europe, with epic views of the Moselle River’s dramatic bends. Even if you skip the more adventurous sections, the panoramic outlook near the summit is more than worth the climb. On warm summer evenings, the golden sunlight over the vineyards is absolutely magical and there’s nothing better than ending your hike with a glass of local Riesling.

Bavarian Alps near Grainau

If you’re looking for classic Alpine views, then look no further than the area around Grainau. Nestled at the foot of Germany’s tallest mountain—the Zugspitze—you’ll find the stunning Eibsee, a crystal-clear lake with incredible reflections of the surrounding peaks. The 7-kilometer trail around the lake is mostly flat and shaded, making it perfect for a leisurely summer stroll. With its turquoise waters, peaceful islands and mountain backdrop, the Eibsee feels like something straight out of a postcard.

Harz Mountains near Thale

The area around Thale is a great mix of myth, mountains and adventure. From the Bodetal gorge, you can hike through steep forested cliffs along the Bode River, which is one of the deepest canyons in central Europe. For a more relaxed experience, take the cable car up to the Hexentanzplatz (Witches’ Dance Floor), where you’ll find panoramic views, quirky folklore statues and even a summer toboggan run. Whether you’re into hiking, history or just cool mountain vibes, Thale has something for everyone.

Black Forest near Bad Rippoldsau

The Black Forest is famous for its dense woods and mysterious charm; the area around Bad Rippoldsau is no exception. A short walk through peaceful forest trails leads to the Burgbach Waterfall—one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Germany. It’s a tranquil spot where you can cool off in the shade, listen to the sound of rushing water and even enjoy a little picnic on the rocks. Saxon Switzerland National Park

Saxon Switzerland National Park looks like something out of a fantasy novel, with towering sandstone formations, lush forests and breathtaking vistas around every corner. The Bastei Bridge is the park’s most iconic spot, offering sweeping views of the Elbe River valley and the surrounding rock towers. But there’s plenty more to explore—whether you’re into hiking, climbing or just taking in the scenery. The park is especially stunning in summer, when the trails are dry and the morning light filters beautifully through the trees.
